Jackdaw: Interplays and Codas; A Fantasia for Guitar
British composer, Andrew Glover-Whitley composed Jackdaw in 2017, following the successful premieres of his Sonata for Guitar (in 2016), and Two Pieces for Guitar (in 2017). This large-scale piece takes as inspiration the composer’s observations of the social interplay among the flocks of jackdaws that regularly gather outside his home. It is not intended to be programmatic or descriptive, but rather honours their mischievous behaviour and cocky mannerisms. The overarching musical form is a fantasy, connected by interplays and codas, drawing from early English composers, in particular John Dowland. The world premiere was originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, but this event was cancelled due to extenuating circumstances.
Red River Resonance (Louis Bouchier and Jen Dunford)
*Resonant Movements*
*Resonant Movements* is an interdisciplinary performance exploring the convergence of electronic music, visual storytelling, and contemporary dance through the lens of shared cultural heritage. This immersive collaboration unites the layered soundscapes and live visual work of Louis Bouchier with the fluid, symbolic movements of Jen Dunford creating a rich sensory experience grounded in Indigenous traditions and reimagined through a modern lens. Drawing from traditional patterns, natural elements, and Indigenous iconography, the performance moves through a narrative of ancestral connection, cultural resilience, and personal identity. Each element—sound, image, and movement—interacts in real time to evoke themes of memory, transformation, and renewal. Themes: – Cultural fusion and evolution – Heritage and modern identity – Resilience and renewal through art – Ancestral storytelling in contemporary forms.
Alicia Proudfoot
Palpate
Palpate is a performance that explores the instrumentation of chronic illness, specifically Alicia’s Asthma as she breathes into the back of her harp while playing. The sound is deeply personal layering a recorded breath soundscape implanted inside the harp and live breathing, with strumming that is modulated through a pitch shifter pedal and attached whammy bar. The sound builds up to calamitous points throughout the performance but also holds space for a gentle contemplation. This work merges Alicia’s harp and visual art practice by outfitting her harp with sculptural legs selected from her series of prosthetics that she is making throughout the year. These legs flaunt the importance of humour when living with chronic illness and drastically change Alicia’s performance style. Palpate is meant to invigorate us to dream fiercely about how we blindly assign worth to health when there are endless stories that radically defy this mindset.
