'Dr.rift' is a Psychedelic/Progressive Rock act by Kyle Halldorson from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Moving / mind altering melodies of psychedelia akin to that of Yes / Tame Impala, weave in tapestries of guitars and keys around Halldorson’s fiery rock vocals reminiscent of Plant / Cornell. Introspective and poetic Radiohead-esque word-play dances atop an unforgettably calculated (but catchy) rhythm section that hits hard like Zeppelin / Queens of the Stone Age.
The debut self-titled LP presents a complexly cathartic bloodletting of grief and anxiety to honor the dead, the living, and self. Songs came to be through the end of a long term relationship, re-establishing what “home” is, and who he (Halldorson) was; all through the first pandemic lockdowns. Devastation loomed during preparations to record the debut LP, after Halldorson’s beloved father - and first musical guiding light - passed away after a long struggle with alcoholism. The recording process, and songs, shifted into a vessel for casting out demons, and tending to wounds.
It’s an emotional blend of Psychedelic and Progressive Rock that pulses with Halldorson’s Indigenous and Celtic roots, keeping his father especially close with his ashes pressed into a signature bolo tie worn during each spellbinding full band performance.
Halldorson’s previous album of all-original music (self-recorded and produced) was ‘Wanderlost’ by heavy prog-rock outfit Dizzy Mystics (WCMA winners in 2020).
