About the event

Bioluminescence Night Swim: (Almost) New Moon 2025!
It's that time of year again! I'm confident there will be bioluminescence by June but I'll be checking as it gets closer.

This date is close to the new moon when it will be darkest. Sun will set at 9:12pm. Technically the park closes at 10pm. We might have some Bluetits visitors from down south!

Location:

Address:
Brackett's Landing North
Sanctuary Conservation Area (North of Ferry)
50 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020

*If you’re facing the ferry as though to board, it’s the section of beach to your right.
Meet at the picnic table near the restrooms

Parking: Limited space in the lot + street parking available nearby, additional parking at the Edmonds Waterfront Center.

This is an informal gathering. Everyone is responsible for their own safety.

Bioluminescence:

"Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon in the Salish Sea that occurs when single-celled plankton emit light as a defense mechanism when disturbed. The light can appear as shooting stars, blue sparkles, fish outlines, or underwater fireworks."

"Noctiluca scintillans, also known as "Sea Sparkle", "Sea Ghost", or "Fire of the Sea", is a large, unicellular, spherical, non-parasitic dinoflagellate microorganism that lives in marine environments and is considered a type of plankton."

"Noctiluca scintillans (plankton) can be found all over the globe, but are particularly abundant in areas of nutrient rich waters. High concentrations of nutrients along with sunlight promotes the growth of (other) plankton, their primary food source, which can result in large algal blooms of Noctiluca, called “red tides”."

"These can happen just about anywhere along the coast, but can be difficult to predict and can have drastic detrimental effects on marine life."

"Some areas, such as the San Juan Islands (and the Pudget Sound in general), are extremely reliable for seeing seasonal bioluminescence without the ecological dangers associated with red tides."

"Just go in the late summer on a dark night (no moon is best), and every time you wave your hand through the water, or watch waves crashing on the shore, you’ll see an eerie and unmistakable blueish green color."
