About the event

Learn how to run a Maths Circle- March 2026
A workshop for teachers and educators to give advice on running a Maths Circle.

About this Event

Three to four times a year the University of Edinburgh runs an event called the (in-person) "Edinburgh Maths Circle": a free drop-in session where children aged from 5 to 16 enjoy learning mathematics with NRICH problems and other hands-on mathematical activities. Further details can be found at: https://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/school-of-mathematics/outreach/maths-circle

Maths Circles have proven to be really popular, with up to 300 visitors, and both children and parents giving positive feedback. Below are some selected quotes from visitors:

"My son does not like Maths at school, but he really enjoys these activities"

"Encourages children to think differently"

"It is very interactive and gives us an opportunity to make Maths fun"

Development workshop for educators

During this workshop, we will give teachers and educators an introduction to what a Maths Circle is, advice on how to run one in their school/community, and what are the main issues to be aware of.

If they wish, participants will then have a chance to see a Maths Circle in action, have a look at how visitors engage with the activities, and talk to visitors.

We will offer to all participants who attend the workshop the opportunity to borrow some of our resources and run a Maths Circle in their classes and/or communities.

If you have children, feel free to bring them along to the workshop, and they can try some problems too. We are happy to provide a certificate of attendance, if needed.
