Dr Michael Stirrat - Everyday Gaslighting: What is it and what do we know about gaslighters.
Gaslighting was chosen as Merriam Webster's 'word of the year' in 2022 but there is a considerable variety of different uses that the word has been put to. Dr Stirrat will discuss what the word has meant in the academic and psychological literature and the personalities of people who use Gaslighting in relationships. As a warning, there will be discussion of coercive control in romantic relationships.
Dr Michael Stirrat has been a lecturer in psychology since 2010 and at Edinburgh Napier since 2023 where he leads a programme on Applied Criminology and Forensic Psychology. His research started with a focus on trust and the evolution of cooperation, but also how this is mediated by perception of faces, particularly with regard to social perceptions of attractiveness, masculinity, and dominance. His most recent work has focused on gaslighting (as a breakdown and weaponisation of trust) and how this relates to other forms of manipulation and aggression.
This event is free to attend, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn't end up in anyone's pocket - it is used to fund our overhead costs, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield.
