Join us Sat 1st Nov, 2–4pm — free workshop, community & food!
We’re launching a year-long project to transform our patch of plain grass near Five Ways into an insect-friendly haven in the heart of Birmingham. Join our launch workshop led by Jazmeen Isa Qureshi, where we’ll look at insects, how we view them, and what they can teach us. Whether you’re a professor or a pre-schooler, there’s something in this for you. This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in insects, sustainability, environments and ecosystems.
About Jazmeen
@jazmeenswildheart is an interdisciplinary ecologist, poet, writer, storyteller and activist. Their work centres on insect bodies and the social worlds they inhabit and reflect, weaving ecology with queer theory, ancestral storytelling and decolonial understanding. They explore how ecological engagement can root and empower under-represented and queer communities.
What is queering ecology?
It’s the practice of looking at ecology through a 'queer' lens.
Together we’ll ask:
🌿 Are we right to see ourselves as separate from nature?
🪲 Why do we find some insects “disgusting”?
🌍 How might a new view of ecology shape how we treat each other - especially those who are ‘othered’ or minoritised?
🐝 How can we build space for insects and all beings in our interdependent web of existence?
More info
The workshop will mix engaging activities, discussion and moments for reflection, suitable for all ages and abilities.
We’ll learn through being with the land and insects: observing, drawing, writing, sitting or speaking are all encouraged as ways of being with the workshop.
