Hello supporters!! This is my new little friend’s story that we hope to help!!
Will is a bright, kind-hearted 10-year-old boy who has faced more medical challenges than most adults endure in a lifetime. At just 10 months old, he was hospitalized with Kawasaki disease, a rare autoimmune condition. Since the age of 6, Will has been fighting an even more devastating battle—a rare form of autoimmune encephalitis, a serious condition that causes the body’s immune system to attack the brain. This disease has stolen much of Will’s childhood. The symptoms go beyond neurological and cognitive symptoms such as uncontrollable tics, memory loss, and severe headaches —he struggles daily with a sense of hopelessness, fear, and a loss of identity. These are impossible burdens for any adult, let alone a child so young.
Over the past three years, Will has been seen by some of the best Neurologists, Rheumatologists, and other pediatric specialists making frequent trips to Tufts University in Boston and Washington D.C. He has undergone treatments ranging from steroids to chemotherapy-level immunosuppressants. While some provided temporary relief, the symptoms always return. The only thing that has consistently stabilized Will has been high-dose steroids, which carry serious side effects. Will has already suffered a bone fracture and a stomach ulcer, both believed to be related to long-term steroid use. Doctors are concerned about what further damage may result.
After trying multiple approaches which have not cured him, Will’s parents began looking for something that could help their son reclaim his life. A close friend mentioned a local family whose son was severely ill for three years but was cured at an out-patient rehabilitation clinic (Spero Clinic) in Arkansas specializing in chronic neurologic conditions that cause life altering disabilities. After doing much research and speaking to people who have personally gone through this program, Will’s parents have hope and faith that it can do the same for Will.
This is why we are reaching out for your help. This clinic is out of state and out of insurance network so it will come at a significant cost. It is a program that lasts 3-4 months where Will would be receiving intensive, personalized treatment for over 30 hours a week.
Below is a rough estimate of the financial cost of the projected 3-4 month treatment regimen.
• $3,500 per week for treatment, totaling $45,500–$56,000
• $2,000 per month for temporary housing, totaling $6,000–$8,000
• Miscellaneous expenses including travel
• Total projected expenses: $51,500–$64,000
