Rails Through Iron Country: The Story of the C&O Craig Valley Branch

Join researchers and authors Chuck McIntyre and Dave Ostrander of the C&O Historical Society for a deep dive into a little-known chapter of Virginia’s rail history.

The Craig Valley Branch of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad was built during an 1880s iron boom — not for coal, but for iron ore. Although the boom was short-lived, the 26-mile line served rural Virginia for decades until its closure in the 1960s.

This talk uncovers the story of a forgotten railway, ambitious beginnings, and the hard realities of speculative railroading in the 19th century.
