About this Event

How do big ideas become lasting change? We call it the quest for yes—bringing people together across differences, grounding ideas in evidence, and co-creating durable solutions.

For twenty years, Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability has championed this approach: setting ambitious goals, developing meaningful partnerships, letting the data speak, and proving that progress is possible even in polarized times. As the Institute celebrates its twentieth anniversary, we invite you to join us for a special program and reception on October 23 that blends reflection and forward momentum:

· Opening Remarks from Duke University President Vincent Price

· Leadership Lessons: Former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency leaders William Reilly (appointed by President George H.W. Bush) and Michael Regan (appointed by President Joe Biden) will join Duke University Vice President and Vice Provost for Climate and Sustainability Toddi Steelman for a candid conversation on advancing environmental progress.

· Bold New Ideas: Institute experts and key partners discuss fresh, evidence-driven strategies for two urgent challenges: 1) protecting communities from the escalating risks of extreme heat (feat. Ashley Ward and Kathie Dello), and 2) sustainably meeting surging electricity demand from AI and other technologies (feat. Tim Profeta and Tyler Norris).

· Up Next: Inspiring lightning talks from three Duke students who are already leading.

This event isn’t just a milestone celebration. It’s an invitation to join the quest for yes: to bring academia together with decisionmakers and communities, to build solutions supported across traditional divides, and to shape a more sustainable future for everyone.

Whether you are a student imagining your next steps, a Duke colleague or partner advancing critical work, or a supporter helping scale impact, we hope you will join us on October 23 from 4-6 p.m. in Goodson Chapel, with reception to follow. Seating is limited; advance registration is required.
