POETRY JAM
Featuring ANDY WILLOUGHBY, HELEN WILKO and ROSS PUNTON.
Three fantastic guests plus quick-fire open floor readings of wide-ranging poetry in the cosy Waddy café lounge - ideal for road-testing new work in front of a warm and appreciative audience. Beginners and slam champions have graced this space. Bring your words and join in. Or sit back and soak up the lyrical atmosphere. Either way, get on down to Waddy - jamming good poetry in Durham City since 2009.
ANDY WILLOUGHBY is a poet, playwright and producer from Teesside, now living in Durham. His books include The Wrong California, Tough and Between Stations. His work is rooted in place, performance and working-class history, and often encompasses rivers, travel and outsider voices. He has been translated into several languages and was UNESCO City of Literature Writer in Residence in Tartu, Estonia. He regularly collaborates with poets and musicians across the Baltic region, as well as throughout the UK.
HELEN WILKO lives in Sunderland. She is Head of English in a local school and hosts King Ink spoken word night at Pop Recs Ltd. Helen writes about places, people and the communities that make all the difference in the world, as well as what it’s like to be at the coalface of education. She has performed at various venues throughout the North East. There are walls in this city, too high to see over, and Helen Wilko is climbing them.
ROSS PUNTON is a writer from South Shields. He is neurodiverse, which gives him a unique world view and sense of empathy. He prides himself on not being a traditional poet. His work touches on everything from the everyday to the absurd. Ross has been an invited performer at several spoken word events in the North East. He has been published in anthologies, including ‘Words on a North East Street’ and ‘Whitley Bay Poetry Trails Hearth and Haven’.
