For the first time, James “Saxsmo” Gates and Dexter Moses will share the stage in NC for a reunion of long-time teacher and student. As graduates from the illustrious NCCU jazz program and educators in their own right, their mission is to continue to uphold and preserve the straight-ahead tradition and honor those who helped them become the musicians they are today.
A Richmond Virginia native, Gates has played and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad in performing with such notable artists as Joe Kennedy, Jr., Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Walter Davis, Jr., Walter Bishop, Jr., The Temptations, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Cobb. He is the Founder/Director/Coordinator of the Dr. Billy Taylor Jazz Studies Program at Virginia State University.
At NCCU, Dexter Moses studied with Dr. Ira Wiggins, Dr. Brian Horton, and artist-in-residence Branford Marsalis. He has performed and recorded with Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Joey Calderazzo, Nnenna Freelon, Lenora Zenzalai Helm, Antonio Hart and many more. He is a saxophone instructor at NCCU, Duke University, and Russell Lacy Music.
