In The Arcades Project (1982), Walter Benjamin writes about ‘rag picking’ as archival research; the idea was to collect ‘waste’. Such archives are subjective, incomplete, and informal. In this context we ask: What is the ‘archival turn’ in arts practice? And, is the archive still turning? We think against the grain, and consider: Why do archives matter at all, and what is an archive? How are archival materials found, recovered, ‘saved’, reenvisioned and reactivated by artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers? Can we think through archival matters and material and address how “repressed, messy or unstable substances and impure formations” (Lange-Berndt 2015) may surface through our work? The workshop focuses on the debates around ‘archives and materiality’, and how arts practice makes the unknown visible.
TENT Biennale brings within our purview of knowledge films, videos and art, which flow outside the circuits of dominant, mainstream and commercial systems.
