FMQ BEGINNING QUILTING CLASS 9:30 am—3:30 pm
MATERIALS LIST
We will cover basic machine free motion quilting, and help you develop skills for quilting quilts, borders, and individual blocks. We will also cover stencils, echo quilting, and continuous line allover quilting designs. We will introduce basic feathers and practice 3 types. Even if you have never done any free-motion machine quilting, you will find yourself able to do basic borders and designs by the end of class, and be well on your way to quilting your own tops!
ASSEMBLE BEFORE CLASS: 3 or 4 Quilt Sandwiches (top, batting, back)– approximately Fat Quarter sized, (pinned or basted) and ready to use. Use a solid, muslin or tonal for the fabric, (not a busy print) so you can easily see your stitches. Any lightweight batting is OK to use.
BRING TO CLASS:
• Sewing Machine (DON’T forget the power cord and pedal!)
• Your machine’s extension table. Free motion quilting is VERY difficult without the space to put both hands down flat, both sides of the presser foot.
• Quilting Thread –contrasting colors are best for visibility in this class (Size 30 or 40 weight shows well, but if you have another preferred size, that is fine).
• Quilting needles (or microtex) for your machine (size 80 or 90 if you are using quilting weight thread)—they should be labeled quilting needles, not universal or ballpoint
• Bobbins – recommend to have several extra already wound with quilting thread and ready for use
• Free motion quilting foot (or darning foot). This is a MUST-HAVE!! It is an open-toed or clear foot, with a spring--- NOT a walking foot. You cannot FMQ without this! Check your machine manual if you are not sure what it is, or ask at the quilt store to be sure. It should have a spring on it, and have a rounded or open foot.
• Paper with pencils for drawing OR a whiteboard and erasable markers. Size needs to be at least 8 ½ X 11 inches, but preferably a bit bigger.
More items you will use: Please either bring them yourself, or plan to purchase during class. I will have some extras to borrow also.
★Quilting gloves (or close-fitting fabric gardening gloves) ★Marking tool—chalk, washable marking pen or pencil, or disappearing marker (your preference)
★ Scissors/snips, small
★ Self-threading sewing needles (they have an open end)
★Quilt sandwiches
Teacher Bio:
Cindy Bjorkman started quilting when her family moved to Houston in 2007 and joined a church which had a hand-quilting group. She started taking classes at area quilt shops the following year, and soon was doing most of the machine quilting for the group’s fundraiser quilts. She has also taken many classes at the IQA Quilt Festival and began teaching at her local Houston quilt shop in 2015. On her domestic machine she has made and quilted 275 of her own quilts (besides quilting at least a hundred more for her friends, church and guild) before purchasing a longarm. She now does most of her quilting with that, although regularly still quilting with her domestic, especially when custom work is required. She and her husband retired to North Texas in February 2020, where she is involved with the Texoma Quilt Guild in Denison and Heritage Quilters in Durant .
