After a very successful Race 1 at Redwoods Forest we bring to you Race 2 of the Inaugural Leith Harriers Trail Running Mini Series !
This course is a roughly 5 km and 200m vert trail race through the lower slopes of the Signal Hill MTB Park.
You will get to push the pace a bit on this one with modest gradients and less technical terrain to really stretch your legs out. You will get to experience a section of the Oceania XC course that was used a few years back by the highest caliber XC MTB races here and across the ditch. You will get to blow up your lungs on an uphill road section thats short enough to make you chase the corner but steep enough that you'll start to see the black closing in around your vision. Luckily after this you get a fun full send down the Easy Down to bring it home! Come down ands get amongst!
This event is designed for beginners to have a go at trail running on a shorter more manageable format and for experienced runners to have a good hit out either for their own glory or as honest speedwork training for other trail races over the summer, including the coveted Three Peaks Mountain Race!
This is a time trial format race with results brought to you by Strava. With a points-based system that will accumulate over the 4 summer races, this may be increased to 6 depending on its success. The Race will start at 6.30 and we will get people away in groups or in 30 second intervals up to 7pm when we will close the course.
The points will work as follows:
First place - 12 Points
Second Place - 10 Points
Third Place - 8 Points
Fourth Place - 6 Points
Fifth Place - 4 Points
General participation - 2 Points
There will also be extra points for segments of the Big Easy uphill and Oceania XC downhill course. We will mark these out with start and finish signs on the day, both of these will accumulate the following:
First place - 5 Points
Second Place - 4 Points
Third Place - 3 Points
Fourth Place - 2 Points
Fifth Place - 1 Points
No Prizes are awarded per race but we MIGHT organise something for top male and female at the conclusion of the series, if we don't you will just have to operate on bragging rights with your workmates who probably don't give a shit anyway!
There will also be a bonus wild card points that MAY be distributed by weight for something ridiculous that happens, most improved performance, or for anyone that goes above and beyond!
If you do not have Strava please bring something you can time yourself with, without Strava you will not be eligible for the segment points. This event is in its infancy and is based off the ease of accumulating results from the Strava segment format, depending on the success of the event we may use timing mats in the future so get down and throw your support in behind it!
Key rules to follow are:
1. This is similar to a fat ass events format so it’s important run to your ability. We are happy to provide advice based off our extensive experience of the Dunedin trails network, but you are responsible for your own safety on course and having a good understanding of the route.
2. We strongly recommend carrying your phone, and do not wear headphones
3. Once you start you are required to complete the course or if you decide to leave without finishing it is absolutely mandatory that you let the event organisers know.
4. You are required to give faster runners or mountain bikers right of way.
7. You must be a tidy Kiwi.
8. If you see someone in trouble or hurt it is mandatory that you check that they are ok and provide aid until someone else can take over the care of them. These are short races you can always have another crack.
9. You are allowed to have more than one go if you think you can better your time on your first attempt. You can run individually or as a group.
10. This is an honesty based event, run the most true line you see possible for your pursuit, line deviations are encouraged for a bit of fun but within the reasonable bounds of the formed tracks and hairpin turns. DO not cut corners excessively.
11. It goes without saying but there is absolutely no flammable substances allowed in any of these areas including the parking lot at the beginning.
12. If you do not stick to these rules you will be disqualified and depending on the severity of your acts you may be barred from participating again.
