Join us at Errick’s venue on Friday July 18 to experience the unique interplay between instrumental jazz and vocal culture at our schools, featuring the sounds of the award winning All Blues (The Otago Girls’ and Boys’ Jazz Big Band) and Nautilus Chorale (The Otago Girls’ Choir). Both ensembles are fundraising to travel to South Island competitions and will present repertoire towards that end as well as some featured items that have been specifically curated for the evening’s performance.
The Nautilus Chorale, directed by John Buchanan, recently won the award for Choral Excellence in Choral Art Music at the Otago Regional Big Sing and have been selected to compete at Cadenza in Timaru. For this event, they have specially curated a set of jazz choral music, including the numbers “Stepping Out”, “Old Devil Moon” and “All That Jazz”, accompanied by a professional rhythm section comprised of Dr Martin (piano), Mr Shields (double bass) and Carl Woodward (drums).
All Blues, directed by Dr Martin, won the award of the “Best Big Band” at the 2024 Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival and have expanded their repertoire to include numbers by Duke Ellington, Madonna and Steely Dan. At the concert, singer Grace Tiko will perform the numbers “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, “Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me”, “Four Minutes” and “Home at Last” with the big band. The band will also perform Wayne Shorter’s “One by One”, which will be a central part of their set at the Southern Jam in Blenheim.
Headlining the concert will be the unique sounds of the Sur Quartet, a modern jazz-folk ensemble featuring the talents of singer Kena Rojas and bassist Miguel Herrera, who will perform a short selection of Chilean folk songs with Dr Martin on the piano and Carl Woodward on drums. The Sur Quartet recently performed a sold out show at the Dunedin Jazz Club and are generously donating their time to assist with our fundraising efforts. Both Mr Herrera, a Spanish Teacher at Otago Girls, and his wife Kena are experienced and accomplished musicians who grew up and trained in Chile.
Opening the evening will be the jazz combo, “Minor Blues”, consisting of Finn Marshall (alto), Callan Power (tenor), Oban Voice (trumpet), Nikita Lu (piano), Fleur de Clifford (bass) and James Phipps-Green. For this event they will perform their competition set, including the numbers “Strasbourg St. Denis” by Roy Hargrove, “Blues Inn” by Jackie McLean and “Little Boat” by Roberto Menescal.
