Join us for Professor Rajesh Katare's Inaugural Professorial Lecture titled "A Roller Coaster Journey through the Molecules of the Heart".
About Professor Rajesh Katare's research:
I come from the vibrant city of Chennai, India, where I completed my schooling before moving to the University of Mysore to pursue my medical degree. My passion for research took shape during my PhD at Kochi University, Japan, where I developed a deep interest in the molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular diseases. After completing my PhD, I began my academic career as a Lecturer in Physiology at Kochi University, focusing on cardiovascular molecular biology.
In 2007, I joined the University of Bristol as a Research Fellow, where I expanded my research to investigate how molecular changes drive heart disease in diabetes, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Since moving to the University of Otago in 2012, my research has focused on developing molecular biomarkers and therapies for diabetes-induced heart and vascu disease, bridging fundamental science with translational impact.
I feel privileged to have been entrusted with the role of Head of the Department of Physiology since January 2023. Our Department is an excellent example of cultural diversity, with students and staff from a wide range of backgrounds. Having lived and worked across India, Japan, the UK, and New Zealand, I have come to appreciate how acknowledging and embracing diversity fosters inclusivity, innovation, and collaboration. This is a value we actively cultivate within our Department.
