The Autumn Concert Series at the Dunedin Jazz Club continues on June 14th with pianist Glyn MacDonald and trio performing original music at Hanover Hall, including a second set collaboration with vocalist Will Luhrs. Known for his smooth vocals and charismatic stage presence, Luhrs has been dubbed New Zealand’s own answer to Michael Bublé. This special evening promises a stylish and spirited celebration of contemporary jazz, original compositions, and vocal charm.
The Glyn MacDonald Trio, including pianist and composer Glyn MacDonald, bassist Luke Belcher, and drummer Jono Blackie, will treat audiences to a dynamic set of original jazz shaped by Glyn’s travels and musical explorations across Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa. With a reputation for finely crafted original pieces and engaging performances, the trio delivers jazz that’s both sophisticated and deeply personal. Their collaboration with Will Luhrs adds a fresh vocal dimension, promising an unmissable night of genre-blending artistry.
A seasoned performer with a globe-spanning career, Glyn MacDonald brings a wealth of experience and musical finesse to the stage. A graduate of WAAPA in both Classical Trombone and Jazz Piano, he has performed internationally at renowned festivals in Rome, Beijing, and Vancouver where he was named CBC Radio’s Artist of the Month. Glyn has worked with leading jazz artists including James Morrison and Rufus Reid, released several acclaimed albums, and currently shares his passion for jazz education through programs at Forte and Burnside. His versatility and energy have made him a standout figure in the Australasian jazz scene.
Joining Glyn is rising star Will Luhrs, an 18-year-old jazz vocalist, songwriter, and producer whose impressive trajectory includes performances with the Christchurch Youth Jazz Orchestra and the All-Star Big Band. He’s taken home regional jazz awards, received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, and appeared solo at Auckland’s Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park. With a background in classical piano and choral music, Will has developed into a skilled and expressive performer whose voice brings warmth and character to every performance. His appearance with the trio marks a unique moment for Dunedin audiences to see a future star in action.
