36,000 nurses, midwives and health care assistants are going on strike for safe staffing for 24 hours on 30-31 July. Show support for your local Dunedin members by joining us to march from Dunedin Hospital to rally on the Tūhura Otago Museum Reserve grounds. All welcome! We need the public to stand with us so our members can continue providing the best care possible - this is your health, your hospital!
8.45am
All NZNO members not working meet me outside the Dunedin Hospital to greet the staff exiting the hospital on strike.
We'll have placards and flags for you but it would be great if you can bring your signs you've made too and wear something purple!
9.00am
All members already at work at Dunedin Hospital and not on LPS stop work and gather inside the central area on the ground floor and then all walk out the Great King St entrance together with staff outside cheering them on!
We will all march left towards Hanover St and around the block, before heading to the Tūhura Otago Museum reserve which will be the main picket base.
A bus will pick up members at Wakari Hospital and bring you to the museum reserve to join the members already there. It will also run you back in the afternoon if needed.
9.15am
As we arrive at the reserve we will show just how strong and many we are by making as much noise as we can for as long as possible!
We will have a BBQ to keep you energised and once we feel we have made enough noise we can retreat inside to warm up in a space booked for you inside the museum. Please note the BBQ food has to be consumed outside and cannot be taken into the museum.
Inside the museum we'll have a few things for you to do or you can just chill out and catch up with members you haven't seen in a while. You’re welcome to visit the free exhibits within the museum during the day. It's your day, so make the most of it!
During the day we'll have a few spot prizes including "the ward/area with the best turnout". Those doing the LPS mahi won't be forgotten either - each ward will be monitored closely to ensure there are no members working when they shouldn't and these areas will also be recognised!
10.30am
We have also arranged for a small group of members to participate in a ‘community giving back’ activity in conjunction with Beachcare who is generously hosting NZNO members on the day. A bus will pick up those who are keen at approx 10.30am and bring you back by 2:30pm. (You'll also get a BBQ lunch and maybe make the paper!) Numbers are limited so talk to your workmates and Register to be a beach volunteer.
12.00pm
We'll aim to have everyone outside to picket again at midday so let all your family and supporters know this is when to show up.
2.30pm
Depending on the feedback on the day we may then march up to the Octagon and back, to make some noise and keep the public informed on what safe staffing should look like, before marching back to Dunedin hospital.
3.00pm
Staff finishing LPS exit Dunedin Hospital with colleagues outside cheering them on!
Then all march together back down to the museum reserve to make some more noise!
