The North Shore Scenic Railroad in Duluth, Minnesota has three dome cars in its fleet, more than any other railroad in the Midwestern United States. Now, a brand new book entitled “There’s No Place Like Dome”, explores the development of the dome car concept, and takes an in-depth look at the history of the three dome cars featured at the North Shore Scenic Railroad.
This 109-page book was written earlier this year by railroad historian and author Robert Tabern. It retails for $20.00 and will soon be available in the gift shop at the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Tabern has always had a love for railroad travel, going back to his youth,
when his parents would take him on various Amtrak trips across America. He has ridden almost every mile of Amtrak, plus train routes in Canada, England, Scotland, France, and Japan. Tabern also heads up the 501(c)3 non-profit organization Midwest Rail Rangers,
which provides educational programs on various train routes across the Midwest. He has written and published more than 20 books to date, many of which are railroad route guidebooks that explain to Amtrak passengers what they are seeing outside the window.
Tabern also worked for the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad for 2½ years, where he researched and wrote a three-volume history book series on the beloved Mark Twain Zephyr. Tabern also wrote books on the history of the Nebraska Zephyr, which are available for sale on select dates at the Illinois Railway Museum.
Tabern and the Midwest Rail Rangers organization are excited to partner with the North Shore Scenic Railroad. Tabern says, “I think this will be a great fit. The North Shore Scenic Railroad has some of the best scenery anywhere in the Midwest – running right along the
shore of Lake Superior. It also has some of the best equipment of any railroad museum in the Midwest… with three dome cars in its fleet. I am happy that we will be able to tell passengers about the history of these beautiful cars. It will just make them appreciate
them that much more.”
