St. Francis and St. Clare had a great love for God’s creation, respecting animals as a part of that creation. Francis in particular is known for preaching to the birds, but he also went out of his way to care for wild animals. Some animals were even drawn directly to Francis, to pray with him or receive his blessing!
On this Feast Day of St. Francis, bring your pet to the grounds of Shalom and participate in a live blessing for your animal friend and you as caretaker. All pets must remain on leashes and owners are asked to clean up after them and be responsible for their good manners! If your pet can’t attend (or has passed away), bring along their picture for a blessing. Children may also bring along their stuffed animals to be blessed!
The blessing will take place, rain or shine, but will not be held in the event of severe weather. There will be tents available for some shelter, but dress appropriately for the weather. Feel free to linger after the blessing so that you and your pet can socialize!
Sr. Marci Blum is a Dubuque Franciscan and a Spiritual Director for Shalom. She is the author of the book Living Like Francis, published in 2005, as well as She’s Not Heavy. She’s My Sis, published in 2012. Her second book is based on her spiritual journey with a special dog named Sis, whose delightful antics led to a new perspective on life! The lessons from Sis’s life and her passing helped Sr. Marci learn to “let go and let God.”
A free-will donation is appreciated. Walk-ins are welcome, but RSVPs are encouraged; please RSVP online at shalomretreats.org or by calling 563.582.3592 by Friday, October 3.
