Siringitu or ‘endless plain’ as it is called in Masai is the name for the large savannah in southern Kenya / northern Tanzania. Each year, around 1.5 million wildebeests antelopes and 300,000 zebras start their long trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains, further north to Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve in search for water and fresh grass. Late July / Early October is one of the best time to spot them crossing rivers of Talek and Mara, which are a habitat for hippos and crocodiles while zebras, buffalos and giraffes graze in the neighbouring open savannah.

The plains are also home to tribes of Masais, who carry on their semi-nomadic lifestyle of traditional herding in the perimeter of national park.
Although Kenya is a dream destination for BIG 5, on this trekkup we are bound to experience a little known BIG 6th. Between July and September, humpback whales migrate from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to warmer waters near the equator to breed and give birth. According to studies, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 humpback whales migrate to the eastern Africa each year.
These magnificent marine mammals can reach a length of 15 metres and weigh around 30 tonnes (about six times the weight of an elephant). Watching them in their natural environment leaping out of the water, sometimes in pairs, or larger family groups, is an unforgettable sight.
On average, humpback whales can travel up to 25,000-30,000 kms round trip during their migration. They are well known for their acrobatic behaviour, such as breaching and slapping the water with their fins and tails. Humpback whales are found in oceans around the world and are known for their complex and haunting songs, which are believed to be used for communication during mating season.
Here comes the unique chance to witness TWO of the greatest wonders of the nature.
