Summer Educator Institute: Crafting Clay though History

From South Asia to the Americas, from Babylon to the Makonde people of eastern Africa, one of the most common medium for creating art has been clay. Throughout time and across geographies, artists and artisans have used clay to create objects of all shapes, sizes, and uses. Through the lens of object-based learning, attendees will explore historical and traditional methods of creating clay works and get hands-on experiences as they create their own works of art inspired by objects in the galleries.

This interdisciplinary three-day workshop will highlight the science, history, design, and materiality of clay found in the permanent collections of the Michael C. Carlos Museum, and with the help of local artists, learn how to incorporate different works of art and hands-on activities into the classroom.

Space is limited, and registration is required by 5 p.m., June 6.
Fee: $160 for Carlos Museum members; $180 for nonmembers.
