Artists, designers and musicians always think they are creating the future in their work. Futurists, constructivists, dadaists, there is a long list, including the work of Kraftwerk, of whom I am a big fan. So, when you look back, the future has a history. Films like Metropolis probably inspired Kraftwerk and they in turn have inspired me.
In 1999 I was fortunate to get commission to design the furniture for the Irish pavilion in EXPO 2000, held in Germany. As a big music fan, hearing the Kraftwerk soundtrack to Expo 2000 (they were also commissioned in 1999) at the tram stops in Hanover made me feel like I was in the future. Kraftwerk have always created music that aspired to the future in their albums such as ‘Computer World’ and ‘Man Machine’. As it the 25th Anniversary of both of our involvements in Expo 2000 I have created a set of 3 robot pieces, by recycling pieces of aviation materials and industrial sources, inspired by ‘Man Machine’ Kraftwerk’s album from 1978.
I will also show Pav Lounge Chairs and Urban Table from the Expo Collection, created for the OPW and Murray O’Laoire Architects with my co-designer Anthony Cleary and designer, maker George Butler. I will also look back to submarines and my own family tree with the inventions of John P. Holland by showing the Submarinocurraplane.
