Drogheda Community Orchestra (DCO) was founded by artistic director and conductor
Tadhg Murphy. Having returned to his home town to teach violin following years studying
and working as a freelance musician, he reconnected with the town’s many talented
musicians.
This led to the idea of forming a community orchestra, one where people could rekindle
their passion for music, others could explore music for the first time, where parents and
their children could make music together and collaborate as orchestra members.
In a town as vibrant as Drogheda, rich in musical tradition, Tadhg believed that a
community orchestra was not just a possibility but an inspiring challenge worth pursuing.
In May 2024, a passionate group of local musicians and music lovers gathered together to
bring this dream to life through the DCO.
The DCO’s inaugural concert took place on 8th February 2025 at the Barbican Centre
Drogheda. It was a celebration of music that captivated the sold-out venue. It featured an
impressive lineup that included works by renowned Irish composers, timeless classical
masterpieces, enchanting waltzes, lively polkas and beloved movie scores.
The concert was not just a performance, but a vibrant celebration of community, talent and
the joy of music.
The orchestra is self-funding through membership subscriptions. The committee of the
orchestra is hoping to organise a series of fundraising events throughout the year in order to
help fund the purchase of music and to help run concerts and events, such as participating
in the Drogheda Arts Festival and more.
The first of these fundraisers is a table quiz, taking place in McHugh’s pub on the Cord Road
on Friday 26th September. A table of four costs €40, with the event kicking off at 8pm. There
will also be a raffle on the nigh
