SUMMER SHOWCASE–Don Quixote & Tin Pan Alley

Dances from "DON QUIXOTE ". Excerpts from the ballet with music by Leon Minkus, transports us to sunny Spain and its national dances including the spirited “Seguidilla” characterized by quick agile footwork. Spanish motifs and flair are seen in the use of the Spanish fan and skirts. The ballet is an exciting display of virtuosic dances culminating in the famous Don Quixote grand pas de deux between Kitri and Basil.

Suite of Dances from “TIN PAN ALLEY” brings the glorious era of music and dance in the late 1800’s through early 1900’s into the 1930’s. The fusion of the emerging influence of African-American music, jazz, blues, ragtime with choreographers from Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Fats Waller are just a few that laid the foundation for what we now consider American music–a vibrant fusion of multiple cultural influences. The audience gets transported to that small area in New York City they call “Tin Pan Alley” because of the sound of the ‘new’ piano with strips of paper on the strings sounds like playing on ‘tins’.

Young students of the school will be presented in the 2 pm show.
