Spiders of Surrey

Love them or hate them, there is no doubt that spiders are fascinating. Spend a morning with tutor, Mike Waite, who will discuss various aspects of the most commonly found spiders in Surrey. He will also share his own story of rediscovering the Great Fox Spider that had not been seen in the county for over 20 years.  

You will then have the opportunity to learn how best to search for these, often elusive, creatures in the ancient woodland of Nower Wood.

Tutor: Mike Waite

Mike is currently Director of Research & Monitoring with the Surrey Wildlife Trust, where he oversees monitoring and research into the effectiveness of the Trust’s strategy on landscape scale conservation. Mike also presently chairs the Surrey Nature Partnership’s Biodiversity Working Group. He is a highly experienced ecologist with expertise in ecological planning and policy development, ecological impact assessment and mitigation, habitat management and creation, and species protection. Specialisms include higher plants, birds and increasingly, spiders. Mike was instrumental in publication of the first statutory biodiversity strategy in the UK, for the Greater London Authority.
