About the event

Re:Frame (Storytelling Through Archives with Adam Lewis-Jacob)
Dhaka University Film Society, supported by the British Council is organising a day-long programme titled ‘Re:Frame: Storytelling through Archives with Adam Lewis-Jacob’ on Saturday 20 September, 2025 at the British Council premises.

The programme constitutes a filmmaking workshop with the British filmmaker “Adam Lewis-Jacob”, based on his documentary film Idrish (2021). Afterwards, there will be a public screening of the film and a Q&A session with the director.

The workshop will introduce the participants to innovative ways of revitalising archival footage and found materials. Through animation, sound, and collage, participants will learn how to reinterpret and remix archival resources to create new narratives. Drawing from ‘Idrish’ as a key example, the session will blend hands-on exercises with insights into experimental techniques, encouraging students to bring their own materials to life.

Idrish, directed by Adam Lewis-Jacob, recounts the struggle of Idrish, who arrived from Bangladesh in 1976 to study at Bristol Polytechnic. After marrying and applying to remain in the UK, he faced deportation following the breakdown of his marriage. Set in the 1980s, the film highlights his fight to stay and the trade union campaign that rallied behind him, revealing the intersections of migration, solidarity, and political struggle.

The filmmaker, Adam Lewis-Jacob, is an experimental artist who combines video, images, performance, and archival materials to reinterpret histories and forgotten narratives. He uses improvisation, collaboration, and creative remixing to explore how collective memory and culture are shaped, bringing overlooked stories to life through innovative filmmaking and exhibitions. He runs the nomadic platform G.G’s, co-founded Céline, curated at Transmission Gallery, and is working on a video installation in Japan and a BFI-funded film on Edwin Pouncey (Savage Pencil).
