In conjunction with Afro Moone and the Moondog Cafe, we warmly welcome Michelle Jahra McKinney to Moondog for an evening honoring the ancestry of a Detroit musical legacy.
McKinney is a native Detroiter who grew up just a short distance from Moondog where she began singing at an early age. Archivist, librarian, singer and griot, McKinney now serves as Director of the Detroit Sound Conservancy, a community-based archive & organization in the process of restoring the historic Bluebird Inn.
For this performance, McKinney will be sharing a wide array of compositions by her late husband Harold McKinney, a pianist and composer who, along with Wendell Harrison, founded the Tribe collective and made substantial and lasting impacts on jazz education throughout Detroit. She’ll be joined by pianist, producer and composer Ian Fink as well as bassist Michael Abbo for an evening of music, recollection and storytelling.
Moondog Cafe is thrilled to host this new trio and aid in the preservationist effort alongside Detroit Sound Conservancy and Afro Moone! Doors will open at 7pm and music will begin at 8pm. Fee for entry is $15 and tickets will be available both in advance and at the door. We look forward to another chance to lift each other up in music and community.
