The Jackson Home: Preservation and the Voting Rights Movement

Join Amber N. Mitchell, The Henry Ford’s Curator of Black History, for a special presentation at the Detroit Public Library Main Branch.

In 1965, the home of Dr. Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson in Selma, Alabama, became a safe haven for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as he strategized and planned the Selma-to-Montgomery marches. These protests led to the Voting Rights Act, one of the most significant pieces of legislation that changed the course of history for all Americans. The Jackson Home is now being preserved by The Henry Ford as a powerful symbol of courage and community.

Join us on the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Wednesday, August 6, at the Detroit Public Library (Main Branch) for a deeply informative presentation by The Henry Ford’s Amber Mitchell, Curator of Black History, on the extraordinary measures to preserve this home and explore its vital role in the Civil Rights Movement.
