Help us add a bit of whimsy and fall flair to Ortenstone Gardens by designing your own custom scarecrow!
Assemble your team (or do it yourself)! Your creations can be silly, serious, friendly, or slightly frightening. Think outside the normal scarecrow!
Here’s the Timeline
•Thursday, October 9 - Send in your completed application (application is posted in this Facebook event discussion area) with a simple drawing of your design by midnight. Don't stress about the drawing. We just want to get an idea of what you are proposing.
•Friday, October 10 – Our official Scarecrow Jury will notify up to seven winners by 3pm.
•Monday - October 13 - Pick up the frame for your scarecrow (provided frames must be used) between 10am and 3pm at the Project 412 office (third floor of the Historic Holmes Theatre building at 806 Summit Ave. in Detroit Lakes, MN).
•Monday – October 20 - Bring your fully assembled Scarecrow to Ortenstone Gardens (28499 Randolph Road in Detroit Lakes, MN) between 10am and 2pm.
•Scarecrows will be on display until Sunday, November 30, 2025.
***The public gets to vote for their favorite scarecrow. The winner will receive $100 in Detroit Lakes Chamber Bucks + “favorite scarecrow” bragging rights! ***
•Scarecrow décor must be removed on Monday, December 1. Scarecrow frames provided by Project 412 must remain in the garden. Scarecrow decor will be disposed of if not picked up on December 1.
Please Follow These Guidelines:
•Project 412 will provide PVC pipe scarecrow frames which must be used as the base of your scarecrow. No mannequins may be used. Entries that use mannequins will not be accepted or displayed.
•Designs must be family friendly and appropriate for all audiences. Entries that are not in good taste, political in nature, or contain brand advertising will not be accepted or displayed.
•Design materials used must be able to withstand any type of weather. No cardboard is allowed. Any sealants used must be put on prior to installation at the garden. Any scarecrow that deteriorates beyond acceptable condition will be removed.
