Strategies for Success in Ridge Preservation and Guided Bone Regeneration
Course Description: Replacement of lost teeth is one of the most common problems providers are tasked with solving. Implants have become the ideal method for doing so, however they are not as simple as every empty space can get one. Two predictable treatment modalities to help ensure proper implant support are Ridge Preservation at the time of extraction, and Guided Bone Regeneration of a deficient site. Over the last 4 decades, tremendous gains in knowledge, materials, and technology have garnered endless scientific justification for what we do and how we do it. In this part of the course participants will learn biological rationales, the scientific research behind them, modern materials, and basic surgical techniques. The content is packaged in such a way that providers of all levels will have an opportunity to learn and fine tune their current practice for the patients’ benefit as well as that of the practice.
Lecture Objectives:
The participants will be able to:
*Discuss common systemic conditions and risk assessment
*Planning of extraction cases and strategies
*Basic ridge preservation techniques
*Understand the differences between ridge preservation and GBR procedures recognize the role of different biomaterials in GBR (ex. resorbable/non-resorbable membranes, bone grafting materials, etc.)
*Learn the importance of flap management involving buccal periosteal release and mylohyoid muscle release
*Case presentation of flap design, sectioning of multi-rooted teeth, membrane adaptation, platelet aggregates, and suturing
Hands On: Ridge Preservation and Guided Bone Regeneration exercise on models with various presentations of sockets and edentulous healed sites.
Day 2: Saturday, September 13, 2025
Platelet Rich Fibrin – The ideal way to maximize grafting results and wound healing
Course Description: The world of biologics in oral surgery has exploded since the 1990’s. Concurrently so has the world of natural medicine. Where these two worlds meet, autologous platelet products offer a natural boost to the body’s natural healing capacity. Surgery relies on tried and tested protocols, and natural biologics have a wealth of literature support as well as clinical applications. From improved healing to enhanced materials handling, there is no reason not to incorporate platelet products as we care constantly seeking ways to increase our odds of success. We will cover the biology, literature support, and different uses of PRP (platelet rich plasma) and PRF (platelet rich fibrin) as an adjunct to the concepts covered in the first lecture.
Lecture Objectives:
*Centrifuge concepts
*Review the history of platelet aggregates
*Discuss the biology of platelet aggregates
*Common uses
*Demonstrate the process of creating platelet products
*Clinical case examples
Workshop:
*Phlebotomy training and fabrication of PRF
*Use of PRF in model grafting exercise like D1 but with the use of “sticky bone”
Meet Your Speaker: LeRoy Horton DDS, MS, DICOI
Dr. Horton is the Director of the Periodontal and Implant Curriculum at Pacific Northwest University (PNWU). Originally from Athens, Greece, Dr. Horton moved to the United States as a teenager and settled in the Tacoma, WA area. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Pacific Lutheran University before attending the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where he graduated in 2007.
After 14 years as a private practice owner, Dr. Horton sold his practice and pursued specialty training in periodontics at Oregon Health Sciences University, where he also obtained a master’s degree in Periodontal Science.
Dr. Horton is board certified in implantology as a Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology (DICOI) and maintains a busy lecturing schedule nationwide. He currently serves as the Chair of the Scientific Committee for the National Dental Association and is an active leader in his local dental community, having previously served as Treasurer and currently as President-Elect of the Seattle King County Dental Society, with plans to assume the presidency.
A passionate educator, Dr. Horton believes that excellence in any field stems from a deep love for it, and he is truly dedicated to teaching.
