Denver’s Little Saigon: A Landmark History marks the 50th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, a pivotal historical event that ended the Vietnam War. The Fall of Saigon led to one of the most extensive and prolonged refugee crises in history, as an estimated 2.5 million refugees fled from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia between 1975 and 1995. In the preceding weeks and immediately after the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, approximately 10,000 Vietnamese refugees arrived and began resettling in Denver. Over the ensuing decade, refugees from Vietnam established businesses in Denver that catered to Asian Americans on South Federal Boulevard between Alameda and Mississippi Avenues. It has remained a vital cultural enclave for Asian Americans in Denver and, to recognize the historic area as a successful and distinct commercial area, Denver’s City Council designated it as the Little Saigon Business District in 2014.
