Conversations at the Conrad

Catherine Stewart Howarth Carter was the quintessential 20th century modern woman: Born in 1913, raised in DeLand during the Roaring Twenties, educated at Stetson University (where she earned a law degree at the tender age of 20), she experienced the vicissitudes of the Great Depression and the uncertainty of WWII and the Cold War period.

Her life was rich and varied: a wife and mother, a prominent attorney; a business woman; a politician who ran for the Volusia County School Board; an advocate for reform of the juvenile justice system; and a lecturer who argued for parity under Florida law for women. She spoke French and Spanish fluently. She engaged in all aspects of her life with zest and an irrepressible joie de vivre, but still enjoyed the quiet pleasures of home life engaging in reading and sewing as her principal hobbies.

Come join us as we will explore the life of this remarkable woman along with the corresponding history of DeLand during the turbulent mid-20th century period.
