Get ready to paddle hard and compete in the Rotary Rowers Dragon Boat Races - it's going to be a wild ride on the water!
About this Event*** HEAR YE HEAR YE, CALLING ALL ROTARY ROWERS!! ***As briefly mentioned at the meeting last Monday, April 7, the Decatur Noon Rotary Club is going to have a team in this year’s
Dragon Boat Race & Festivalbenefiting the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation!
We need team members/paddlers; it will be a fun day! Speaking of which, the day is
Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Point Mallard Aquatic Center beach, and the link for more information is
t-festival/. Most everyone is familiar with this event, but if not, it is a huge draw with many teams and many people out there; there will be food, drink, we will have a Rotary tent set up to headquarter at and hang out.
Here’s the deal: The board has graciously agreed to pay the initial registration fee of $1500.00 (and maybe more) and it is a fundraiser, so it is possible (wait and see) that all paddlers will be asked to contribute $50.00 (a mere pittance) and then we will pass the hat and take up contributions at one or more Rotary meetings, so everybody can participate in this worthy and fun cause. The money is earmarked to aid in the latest technologies and such for our local health care facility, DMH. Any individual paddler who raises $100.00 or more as well as the whole team if $2500.00 is passed, gets a T-Shirt.
And you say you're not the World's Greatest Paddler? No worries- we will have on-site training sessions (hopefully at least two) the week before the event! It's not about strength anyway; it's about staying together and following the beat, as well as the instructions given. We need
21 volunteers (thank you if you have already signed up!)
who want to have fun and raise money for a great cause, first come-first served! This is made up of 20 paddlers, and one (1) drummer whose job is to dress up and act crazy, but mainly to keep the beat for the paddlers. The company that runs this will provide a professional steerer/oarsman so we don’t go off course. We will have to have at least eight (8) women, and spouses and older children/grandchildren are welcome; the only requirement being that they have to be at least 16 years of age. I want to be competitive, but the main goals are as follows, in this order:
(1) Raise Money; (2) Have Fun; and (3) WIN!!!You can reply to my email of: or send me a text/call at 256-606-6007, see me at one of the meetings, contact President Terri, or there is going to be an online signup sheet, I think. There should also be sign-up sheets available at each meeting from here on out.
Our team name will be something to do with "ROW-tary," duh!
Sign Up PLEASE, and As Always, Yours in Rotary Service,Jon R. Sedlak
