On Saturday, April 26 from 10am-2pm, Legacy Decatur, the nonprofit stewards of Legacy Park, present Community Day, an afternoon of environmental education and social connection.
Headlining the event will be the Decatur Environmental Sustainability Board’s Earth Day Festival, featuring a variety of participants focused on ways to enhance your environmental footprint at home and throughout the community. In addition to sharing the work of the ESB, the event will introduce Hometown Habitats, a new City of Decatur program that recognizes Decatur residents for their commitment to sustainable practices in caring for their property. The first ever Hometown Habitat winner will be announced at the Festival, along with an opportunity for you to nominate the front yard of a deserving Decatur neighbor.
Come on by to learn, share knowledge, connect with green organizations and community builders, and discover kindred spirits to help you on your journey to becoming a greener, more connected resident.
Also featured will be the Spring Plant Sale and Open House from Trellis Horticulture Therapy Alliance where you can get your garden up and running and learn more about therapeutic horticulture and accessible gardening.

Paint Love Art Mural - Come join local nonprofit Paint Love to create a new mural on one of Legacy Park's basketball courts! No experience needed - just swing by the court on the north side of campus (next to the chapel) and spend as much, or as little, time as you'd like. The Paint Love team will be there and ready to welcome you between 10am and 2pm.
Decatur Housing Authority Double Dutch Performance & face painting - Decatur Housing will be bringing the Trinity Walk Jumpers to perform jump rope demonstrations and to teach kids how to jump. They will also have Earth Day-themed crafts available for children to enjoy and take home. 12pm
GGN Decatur Kitchen Garden tours - Take a tour of Decatur's Kitchen Garden (DKG) with Global Growers Network - explore the garden’s diverse ecosystem and network of growers! Attendees can learn about the history of the land, permaculture design techniques used to sustain the garden, as well as diverse gardening styles reflecting the backgrounds of growers from countries such as Bhutan, Afghanistan, and Nepal. The garden also showcases that culture as an essential component of agriculture, and emphasizes use of native plants and herbs that benefit the soil, local pollinators, and producers. Global Growers Network offers a variety of ways for community members to engage, so might as well start "from the ground up" - in the garden! 10am-2pm
Tai Chi Demonstrations with Tai Chi 4 Life Co-Op - The ancient internal arts of Tai Chi & Qigong help heal and improve overall health and well-being. Join us for this free learning and self-healing opportunity. 12pm and 1pm demo.
Decatur Arts Alliance Artist Open Studios - Visit the 7 artists in the Creative Village at Legacy Park for a tour of the artist studio space! 10am-2pm
Varying in its focus from year to year, Community Day celebrates the community-serving work of Legacy Park’s 18 nonprofit tenants and provides a forum by which the broader Decatur community can learn more about the good things happening all around them.
