Dearborn Symphony is set to close its season with a spectacular finale on May 9, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center. This electrifying evening of orchestral storytelling will bring to life some of classical music’s most evocative works, along with the highly anticipated world premiere of In Other News by Dearborn-based composer Anthony Joseph Lai.
The program is a dazzling celebration of music’s ability to paint vivid pictures and tell compelling stories. Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain will set the tone with its swirling, dramatic energy, followed by the elegant yet playful Dance of the Hours from Ponchielli’s La Gioconda. Audiences will then be swept into the mischievous magic of Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a piece brimming with whimsy and adventure.
Following intermission, the Dearborn Symphony will present the world premiere of In Other News, an innovative and thought-provoking new work by Anthony Joseph Lai. Inspired by his observations of televised journalism and its impact on global awareness, Lai’s piece explores contrasts—both musically and thematically—challenging the listener’s perception of consonance and dissonance, comfort and discomfort. Drawing from personal experiences and the shifting tides of news coverage, the composition is a deeply moving reflection on current events and their portrayal. The composer will be in attendance to introduce the piece, offering the audience a unique insight into his creative process.
The concert will conclude with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919), a masterpiece of orchestral color and dynamic storytelling. With its haunting melodies, dramatic swells, and triumphant finale, the Firebird Suite promises to bring the season to a breathtaking close.
