About the event

Elderton Winery Visit
Open House: Saturday, September 6, 2:00-4:00pm

Help us welcome Elderton from Australia to Wisconsin with a special tasting with Cameron Ashmead, co-director of the winery!

The vineyard was first planted on the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa in 1894 by early German settlers, the Scholz family. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who named the Estate ‘Elderton’. He built himself a sprawling homestead on the Estate and sold the fruit to his family’s winery. It was run successfully for many years, but became derelict in the early years of the vine pull (circa 1975).

“If you buy the house, I will give you the surrounding 72 acres of old vines for nothing”. This was the proposal offered to Lorraine and Neil Ashmead. The rambling old homestead looked ideal for a growing family and the Ashmead’s worked tirelessly to salvage and restore a phenomenal treasure of a vineyard. They started producing wines in 1982.

Today, the winery is run by the second generation, brothers Cameron and Allister Ashmead, with Cameron’s wife, Jules Ashmead, leading the winemaking team. The estate spans 160 acres across three vineyards: Nuriootpa, Greenock, and Eden Valley, each with unique terroirs.

After 11 years working in far flung markets such as Sydney, London and Munich, Cameron Ashmead returned home in 2003, and today oversees the business. Like the entire Ashmead family, he is passionate about food and wine. Being a strong believer in the Barossa cause, Cameron is the Chairman of the Barossa Community Store. He is also the current chairman of the Nuriootpa Regional Community Association. Additionally he sits on the Barossa Grape Winemaker Association Environmental Committee.

Meet Cameron on Saturday, September 6 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. during our OPEN HOUSE tasting. He’ll be here to answer your questions, teach you about Elderton, and taste the following wines with you. He would also love to sign your bottle!
