We're thrilled to announce our new Folk Art exhibition which will feature handmade items from the museumโs collection along with loans of beautiful art works, needle craft, and ceramics from Northampton Museum and Art Gallery.
Loans from the Canal and River Trust will allow us to explore the theme of Canal Boat art and life on the canals, both the history through these loans, and present day canal life through the work of lino print artist and canal boat owner Charlotte Ashman.
The exhibition features the work and practices of contemporary Northamptonshire artists. These artists are keeping their crafts alive and often teaching through workshops and courses.
Displays include works from stained glass artists Tony Judson and Rachael Aldridge, printmaker Kat Lendacka, felt and textiles artists Nikki Wheatley, and Anna Steiner, weaver Amanda LโAnson, ceramicist Marika du Plessis and painter Charlie Kitchen.
We are also pleased to display items from local private collectors of folk art.
Folk Art as a genre of work has often been called naรฏve art since it was considered to have been made by untrained amateurs, but today Folk Art has come to mean something quite different to many creatives. In fact most modern makers of Folk Art are trained and skilled artists.
We are delighted that so many contemporary Northamptonshire artists accepted our invite to exhibit their beautiful work, these items will compliment and contrast wonderfully with the historic items on display.
