NSA is teaming up with British Wool to introduce fundamentals of shearing, with live demonstrations from qualified instructors and a chance to have a go at shearing, alongside sessions on wool handling and an overview of the wool grading process.
The first workshop will take place on Tuesday 23rd September at Home Farm, Brough Park, Richmond, kindly hosted by Anna Pennell of Nipna Rare Breeds. With a flock including Wensleydale, Lincoln Longwool, Clun Forest, and Kerry Hill sheep. The day provides an opportunity to explore a wide range of wool types in a practical setting.
The workshop will cover information on why shearing is important, technique, preparation, biosecurity, wool handling and wool grading, along with much more through the day.
There will be a practical shearing experience during the workshop, which is also open for those new to shearing to have a go.
There will be a competition to identify the sheep breed with a chance to win a voucher for a 2026 shearing course (equivalent to a full course or £100 towards the cost of a course, depending on level of experience).
This is a free event, with a light lunch and goody bag included.
