North Eastern Railway Association Lectures

We're pleased to welcome the North Eastern Railway Association with their programme of fascinating talks. These lectures focus on a range of railway topics, and include a Q&A session.

🚂 March 8th - Repression to Recognition: Walter Hudson and the growth of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants from 1867 to 1897 (Ian Mitchell)

After the crushing defeat of a strike on the North Eastern Railway in 1867 the next thirty years saw the growth of Trade Unions until the Amalgamated was finally recognised by the Company’s Board in 1897. Ian Mitchell explores the change through the life of Walter Hudson, who was a mineral guard at Darlington for most of his 26 years on the NER and Secretary of the Darlington Branch of the Amalgamated from 1886 to 1898.

Ian Mitchell is a Vice-President of the North Eastern Railway Association and the author of several research papers on local railway history.
