Lunch with the Arts - Pioneer Playhouse, 76 Years of Bringing Broadway to the Bluegrass

Join us on Tuesday, June 3 from noon to 1 pm for Lunch with the Arts with Heather Henson and Robby Henson, owners and directors at Pioneer Playhouse. Admission is FREE!

In 1949, Danville native, Eben C. Henson, decided to follow his dream and start a summer stock theatre right here in his hometown. And the rest is history—76 years of it! From its first season at the Darnell Kentucky State Hospital for the Mentally Ill to a cow field next to Sunnyside pool, to a one-of-a-kind theatre complex built entirely from reclaimed materials, Pioneer Playhouse has been a labor of love for the Henson family and integral part of the Danville community for over seven decades.

Heather and Robby Henson will talk about the unique history of Kentucky’s oldest outdoor theatre, founded by their father, and will also give a preview of the 2025 summer season. Members of the 2025 company will also join in to talk about the upcoming plays.
