On Saturday, July 19, visit three historic sites to learn about the rich shipbuilding heritage of the Damariscotta River and Great Salt Bay. Each location offers a different perspective, and together they tell the full story. Visit one site or get a fuller story by stopping by all three!
Damariscotta Historical Society (3 Chapman St., Damariscotta)
Open from Noon to 4 P.M.
View a newly arranged collection featuring photographs of locally built vessels and historic shipbuilding tools donated by Calvin Dodge, who will be present to answer questions about the area's shipbuilding past.
Chapman-Hall House (270 Main St., Damariscotta)
Open from Noon to 4 P.M.
Explore a special exhibit of navigational instruments. Jeff Miller, who reproduced the tools on display, will discuss how mariners used them to stay on course. The exhibit also highlights the maritime connections of past Chapman-Hall House owners.
Newcastle Historical Society (Corner of Main & Pump Streets, Newcastle)
Open from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M.
Learn about local shipbuilding from its beginnings in 1765 to the final schooners built in 1920. A display of photographs and narratives traces the evolution of vessels built in Newcastle. Tim Dinsmore and other board members will be available to share their knowledge.
A Walking Tour pamphlet of Downtown Damariscotta, including the Newcastle site, will be available at all three locations.
Join us for an afternoon of history, craftsmanship, and connection to our maritime roots.
