WORKSHOP
Guitarist, songwriter, producer and co-founder of the Institute for the Musical Arts June Millington will lead a workshop followed by a performance. Her presentation will explore the early experiences of women in music, particularly in folk and then funk/rock, highlighting the significant resistance they encountered. As June recalls, "we might as well have said we wanted to walk on the moon." She will also discuss the social transformations she and her bandmates navigated, including the Vietnam War, Flower Power, Civil Rights, shifts in music styles, the Me Too Movement, and evolving perspectives on sexual orientation.
During the workshop, June will use two electric guitars to demonstrate guitar techniques and answer questions about both standard 6-string and slide guitar playing which she learned from friends Lowell George and Skunk Baxter who mentored her playing. The session will include slides and photos and incorporate a question-and-answer period. The event is open to all ages.
CONCERT
June Millington “one of the hottest female guitarists in the
industry” (Guitar Player Magazine) has been making music since she was a child playing ukulele in her native Philippines. Having moved from Manila to California in the early sixties, she and her sister, bassist Jean, turned in their folk guitars for electric and formed a succession of all-girl bands. By 1969 they were in Hollywood with the band Fanny, the first all-women rock band to be signed to a major label (Reprise Records) and record albums, not just singles. Through five successful albums and extensive touring of Europe and North America, Fanny served notice that women could do more than simply sing: they could write and play passionate rock ‘n roll. As David Bowie said of the group in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine: “They were one of the finest f*cking rock bands of their time... They were extraordinary; they wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers... They are as important as anyone else who’s ever been, ever...” (Rolling Stone magazine, January 2000)With her incredibly expressive vocals, dazzling guitar work and wonderfully crafted songs, June casts a spell over her audience: “(Millington’s) choice of notes to sing or play is letter-
perfect. She doesn’t need to prove she has great chops: she makes music instead.” (Jim Santella, Buffalo NY News).
“If they tell you you can’t do it, you just turn it up and play like a girl!” from June and Jean’s “Play Like a Girl.”
