Fun Facts About Manatees:
- Manatees are nicknamed “sea cows” because they graze on seagrass for up to 8 hours a day.
- They can weigh up to 1,200 pounds but are gentle and slow-moving.
- Manatees must surface for air every 3–5 minutes, but they can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes when resting.
- These marine mammals are closely related to elephants!
Natural Areas Tour at 12:30 p.m.:
Take a guided hike through Deering Estate’s protected natural areas with our naturalist staff. Along the way, learn about native plants and wildlife, and visit the historic Cutler Burial Mound.
Stroll the Mangrove Boardwalk:
Enjoy a peaceful walk through a unique ecosystem teeming with diverse wildlife. The boardwalk is open daily for self-guided access.
