Learn about the public visits of Frederick Douglass to Cumberland and Allegany County and his relationship with Lloyd Lowndes & others.

About this Event

Frederick Douglass is closely associated with Baltimore City and Maryland's Eastern Shore but on multiple occasions he visited and addressed communities within the mountains of Western Maryland's 6th Congressional District.

Join a debut walking tour sharing the history and highlights of the high-profile visit United States Marshal Frederick Douglass made to Cumberland, Maryland, arriving by train, escorted through town by a large procession and speaking at the old fairgrounds in company of local AME pastors, politicians and community leaders.

Author, journalist and local historian John Muller will detail the visits of Frederick Douglass to Cumberland and Frostburg, as well as share insights into his relationship with Cumberland-based Governor Lloyd Lowndes, as well as other political and community leaders in Allegany County.

Total walking distance is around two miles. Please wear comfortable shoes. Photography encouraged. Questions and conversation will ne encouraged throughout the tour.

Starting location of the tour will be the statue of George Washington to the left of the entrance to the Allegany County Circuit Courthouse.

John Muller is the author of Frederick Douglass in Washington, D.C: The Lion of Anacostia (2012) and Mark Twain in Washington, D.C.: The Adventures of a Capital Correspondent (2013) and is currently at work on Lost History: Frederick Douglass on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Muller has presented at the Library of Congress, American Library of Paris, Politics and Prose, Newseum, Washington County Free Library and other venues. He has been featured as a local historian on C-SPAN, WAMU, WYPR, WEAA, NBC4, WBAL, WDVM and other local and national media outlets, including West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the pages of the .

Over the past five years Muller has presented a series of lost history lectures in Cambridge, Maryland at the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center, Hagerstown at the Washington County Central Library and Ebenezer AME Church, Denton at the Caroline County Public Library, Baltimore City at the Enoch Pratt Central Library, Frostburg at Frostburg State University and elsewhere throughout Maryland and West Virginia. He has led tours in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Frederick, Hagerstown, Harpers Ferry and areas of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
