Join Joanna Finch & friends for a send off party at the Abbey at her final show in the Salish Sea before boarding Via Rail to sing and play all the way to Halifax.
If you’ve ever attended Joanna’s performances you will know her for her diverse, inclusive and creatively expansive approach to performance.
This show is a glimpse of some of the 300 plus songs she has written over 50 years of being a conduit for music that has floated into her heart and voice while living on Vancouver island in the Salish Sea Archipelago, and during travels to Haida Gwaii, Kyuquot, China, Antigua, France, Ecuador and Bali.
“It took some effort for me to accept the name, ‘The Salish Sea Siren,’ but as I understand the meaning of SIREN, this fits precisely the purpose and effect music has had on my life as I’ve journeyed to many counties, listening to the songs that come to me as gifts on the wind and waves. A SIREN draws sound to her, and those sounds are transformed to songs. Just as the traditional Sea Siren lures sailors into a watery death, I lure sound into rebirth, transforming experiences and emotions into poetry, and poetry into songs.
My family arrived in Canada in the 1600’s to the east coast; and, more recently my direct ancestors arrived in Victoria as pioneers in 1856. The Salish Sea biosphere has fed my body and soul since I was born in 1960; feasting on salmon, blackberries, and apples has kept me healthy. Swimming in the ocean reminds me that I am a sea creature, and each time I return to the eternal Mother of All Things, the stardust that brought me to Earth sparkles and glimmers. I am not alone in knowing this, that water heals and restores. I love life. I love all Nature: trees and winged ones, four legged, two legged, hopping, swimming, skimming ones…storms that wash clean footprints and debris; and still, quiet nights of starry skies.
I’m thrilled to be travelling across Canada by train, singing my songs and stopping along the way to offer Sound Bath Journeys, Vocal Workshops and Folk- Cabaret concerts. (Hopefully I’ll get to sing some jazz with other jazzy musicians in Toronto, Montreal and Halifax…)
When I travelled coast to coast in 1978 I learned Swinging Shepherd Blues on the flute- I’ll be playing that at my concert on September 26! Please come and enjoy the show! I have some very special guests performing with me.”
