The Wizard of MGM A Look Behind the Curtain At Four Decades of Special Effects

Robert Welch, the grandson of MGM’s master of special effects, presents an amazing look into what went into creating the eye-popping visual effects of more than 180 movies. His grandfather, A. Arnold “Buddy” Gillespie, was a master of both art and technology, and served as head of the special effects department for four decades, earning 12 Oscar nominations and four Oscars.

Mr. Welch will showcase many of the secrets that are revealed in his grandfather’s memoirs “The Wizard of MGM,” including the epic effects in some of your favorite films like The Wizard of Oz, Ben Hur, Forbidden Planet, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.

Join us for an evening honoring an unsung artist who had a profound impact on our movie-going enjoyment.

Our museum entrance is located at the backside of Veterans Memorial Building. The program will be in the Multipurpose Room and can be accessed through our museum.
