Sun Printing for Zines: Cyanotype/Anthotype Fundamentals

Local LA makerspace CRASH Space has been invited to exhibit at the Wende Zine Fest in Culver City this August, and we want YOUR zines for the booth! We've also opened our doors for a series of classes open to the public as part of our Summer of Zines series.

This class will be a CRASH course on experimenting with anthotype and cyanotype, where participants will learn how to make and tone sun prints for digital reproduction in zines - either as background art or as the main feature. Traditional techniques include printing from film and digital negatives, flowers, and foliage, while nontraditional techniques will include layering stencils, collaging transparencies, and digitally manipulating scans to combine anthotype and cyanotype prints.

OBJECTIVES

How to print with the cyanotype process

• How a hydrogen peroxide rinse before the wash helps increase contrast
• How to tone to get different colors than blue

How to print with the anthotype process

Express yourself and make art with your voice by sun printing with found and manipulated objects

• Photograms
• Collaged negatives (either using transparent magazine cutouts, layering negatives and stencils, or by digitally manipulating collaging film negatives and printing on transparency paper)
• Human shadows/self portraits

Mariam Matta is an avid DIYer, artist, and writer that builds databases for nonprofits. Her poetry collection, which featured visual poetry made out of magazine collages, received a first prize award at USC’s 19th Annual Writing Conference. Her projects take a special interest in the alchemy of trash to treasure and destruction to reconstruction.
