We live in a crazy world these days. Our leaders lie, our TV and movies are full of CGI, the content on our websites is increasingly created by AI and half of the posts and comments are by bots. Even the popular music is so full of auto-tune and studio tricks that it can’t be reproduced live without pre-recorded tracks. Nothing feels real anymore.
But these seven intrepid musical explorers have discovered the antidote to all that. Real, hand-crafted songs that come straight from their hearts and souls to fill YOUR heart and soul. Whether you call it folk music or Americana or anything else, it is real and pure. Just a performer, their song, their voice, their instrument and you, their precious audience.
These are seven of Southern California’s finest professional singer-songwriters, the kind of artists that other artists look up to and learn from.
ART PODELL was a prominent performer in Greenwich Village during the early 60s folk revival. SEVERIN BROWNE is sometimes called the Godfather of Folk, his tunes exciting audiences for decades. JOHN ZIPPERER, the King of the Singalong, is a crowd-pleasing entertainer, known to stir audiences to get up and dance and sing. TRACY NEWMAN is an Emmy-winning comedy writer who has returned to her folk music roots, creating songs that are sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, but always entertaining. KEN HOLME writes some really quirky tunes but then will bust out a beautiful love song or a spontaneous Elvisism. CRAIG LINCOLN crafts some of the most literate songs around and sets them to inventive chord progressions and melodies. KEVIN KELSO, the newest member of the In Big Round and the group’s only keyboard player, will perform perfectly constructed songs that often display a theatrical flavor.
In the Big Round started as a songwriter’s group that critiqued each other’s performances in private.
