Hello! On the 18th May 2024, our world turned upside down in a heart beat.
It was a Saturday, at approximately 5.05pm that I received a phone call from my husbands phone which I knew was not good as he would have been on his way home from work riding his motorbike on the lane between Dunkerswell and Broadhembury. It wasn’t my husband calling me, it was a stranger telling me my husband had come off his bike.
My son and I drove up to the scene in what seemed to take forever but it was ten minutes away, my daughter followed swiftly after coming from another direction . We saw Alex lying on the road, screaming but strangely calm. I remember thinking that he had just broken a leg or arm but when the air ambulance turned up by road and also by air, we knew .
We are forever grateful to the police, the paramedics and of course the two wonderful locals that found him, but also to the air ambulance as if it wasn’t for the crew that arrived both by road and then aircraft, flying him to Southmead Hospital Bristol where he spent nearly five weeks in an induced coma, he would not have survived - but he did against low odds having sustained a broken collarbone, broken shoulder blade, twenty broken ribs, a collapsed lung , three blood clots and muscle loss due to being in a coma for so long.
Now eleven months on, he is still on this long road to rehabilitation but it could have been a very different story.
On behalf of myself and my family, we will never forget all those that saved Alex and although every day I spent at the hospital thanking all the staff from the health workers, the physios, the nurses, the consultants and the list goes on, they all said the same thing …I am only doing my job. They don’t get it! It’s not a job - they are miracle workers, they are heroes and although this doesn’t seem enough, the least I can do is organise a family fun day in Cullompton to say thank you , predominately raising money for the Devon Air Ambulance.
A fantastic family fun day awaits you at the CCA Cullompton raising money for the Devon Air Ambulance ! We will have plenty to keep all ages entertained with stalls, fair, live music, catering and a raffle plus much more !
